Recently I worked with a great company called GroupBC who provides data driven BIM software for it’s corporate clients. Having worked with the Head of Marketing at GroupBC in the past, I was the go-to person to help them solve a few problems they were experiencing. What the company had was a great looking website but they were hampered by the limitations imposed by the system the website was run on – this system being SquareSpace.
SquareSpace
SquareSpace is an online tool that lets anybody build their own website, with no technical skills, a low budget, and all for a relatively small monthly fee. Hosting is taken care of and you use their online tools to build, update and manage every aspect of the website, such as adding new pages of content, videos, images and so on as so forth. SquareSpace certainly has a lot to offer and is a great choice for many people, such as start-ups and SME’s, but when it comes to taking the website to the next level and improving it’s online visibility, it starts to suffer.
WordPress
This is where a standalone website with it’s own CMS, such as WordPress, comes into it’s own. You can control pretty much everything you need to, such as the speed and spec of the web server, the website functionality and the onsite search engine optimisation – an essential part of every successful website out there.
To do the best possible job, you do need to have developer skills to some extent. Many use free and paid-for WordPress themes and plugins to give them the tools and control they require, but just like SquareSpace, you could be limited again by the functionality and design you are given.

GroupBC
GroupBC needed more than just an off-the-shelf theme, they required the help of an experienced Freelance web designer to give them exactly what they needed. Gladly, they commissioned me for the project and work closely alongside the Head of Marketing at the company to ensure all the best practices were adhered to.
A new theme was created that exactly mirrored the current website. Then the long process of the site build was started that required me to move the pages, navigation, permalinks, media, forms and so on across to complete the conversion. Once the build was complete, all the additional, SEO related work was carried out. In short, the project took approximately 4 weeks to complete and has proven to be a huge success with one extremely happy client.
